At its center stand the Etemmu, the spirits of the dead who dwell within the Underworld, but surrounding them are older and more dangerous powers whose names inspired fear throughout the ancient world. Among these were the Gallu, relentless agents of the Underworld said to drag souls into the realm of the dead. The Alû haunted the night and afflicted sleepers with terror and oppression. The Rabisu lurked at thresholds, crossroads, and forgotten places, waiting in silence for the unwary. The Zaqiqu traveled through dreams and carried messages from realms unseen. Above them all loomed greater powers such as Erra, lord of devastation and upheaval, whose myths describe cities falling into ruin beneath his influence, and Asag, a monstrous force of chaos associated with disease, disorder, and destruction. Ancient peoples believed such beings could bring calamity upon armies, scatter kingdoms, unleash pestilence, and overturn the fortunes of rulers. Whether understood as gods, demons, spirits, or manifestations of cosmic disorder, they represented the destructive powers that stand in opposition to life, order, and stability. The Curse of the Etemmu is therefore not a working of benevolent spirits or celestial powers. It is an ancient curse of the Underworld and the forces that Mesopotamian civilization associated with death, ruin, vengeance, restless spirits, and the mysteries that lie beyond the grave.
